POOP

So the other day I made my way down to Reading Frenzy, a Portland indy zine and comic/warez store near Powell Books. I happened accross this rather silly titled book called "Poop" by one Sam Sharpe. What initially caught my eye was the either hand painted or messily stenciled title on the book in blue and yellow paint. It's a small touch but it made me want to hold the book and feel the texture of the paint. Once it was in my hands... the collection of well drawn, single panel comics made me want to keep it. While the name "Poop" may suggest a rather crass book it's really filled with rather witty puns and visual gags covering such subjects as mermaids, luncheons, the counts sex life, vaginas and grocery shopping with Jesus.

Multicolor Registration and Silkscreening

Color registration used to be my foe and involved lots of transparencies, single color at a time printing, tape, and a ton of time wasting.

After many methods, I've finally started using a registration board for lining up my color on the screens. This makes setting them up on press and getting reliable color placement super easy. I still use tape to mark were I lay my paper prints down at but laying all my colors at once instead of one at a time is a huge time saver.

I was first introduced to the registration board back when I took the Silkscreen Academy course from Ryonet. They offer a pre-made board for about $80 that's a bit fancy then what I needed. I got the idea to make my own when I visited Tilteed.com and saw theirs. You can make one like mine for about $12, plus some time.
If you are doing anything with multicolor you're gonna want to setup one up. I used a piece of 25" x 25" plexi glass that I picked up at our local Ace Hardware. Then I taped off a space of 24" x 20" ( my screens actual size), and marked in the center lines. On the back, I taped registration marks for various size prints.
With your board in place you want to print your artwork transparencies with registration marks, typically this option can be found in most Adobe softwares print window. You want to put some tape on your transparencies then line up the marks by eye. When all lined up, you simply drop your screen onto the transparency using the boarder lines.

Once done you're all set to expose...
I'm actually posting this while I wait for the above screen to dry! Be sure to join us Friday, Saturday or Sunday for more Silkscreen demos during our Black Friday 3 Day event!

Pup & Sheep - Wood prints

I've got these lil wood panels that I cut and sanded down from some found wood just over a year or so ago. Initially I printed up a small batch of Binary Thank You cards on them, but found the process to be really difficult. A year has passed, and my skill and understanding of my press has improved, so this time around, it was pretty easy.

A few post back I submitted this lil doodle of a pup and some sheep... I said I had more in store, and there's two other projects in the works with them, but these lil wood panels are almost done... All said and done, there are only 8 sheep and 4 pups. That's 2 sheep per pup per set. I need these through our Black Friday Event but will be placing them on Etsy afterwards.

The Shop

Seeing as this is my 200th post, I thought it fitting to officially announce the opening of my new shop space. One of the primary reasons I moved from my apartment in the NW to NoPo was the promise that this space held.

I'm incredibly excited! Originally this space was a garage and had been used for home brewing. The current owner of the house had repurposed it as a dog pin and lounge space ( including a full size beer fridge) but in more recent years it's just been used for general storage. We removed a built in dog pin that was in the far left corner, installed a washtub over the french drain in the far right corner, installed a large chalkboard, some lights and modified a rescued cabinet from the rebuilding center into a drying and storage unit for the screens.

I hope to get my supplies sorted out this week and get going on two card projects for my Etsy shop before the weeks end. I also have several apparel projects in the works, with hopes of getting those printed by next week. Stay tuned!

People of Vancouver BC

I've officially been on Sabbatical for 7 days now. I spent the first day unpacking from my recent move, then repacking for my trip to Vancouver BC. Now that I'm back, I'm still organizing from the move. Though I think my new studio will be up and running in the next day or so. There's lots in the works and I thought I've neglected this blog long enough, so I took a few moments and put together the following composite of sketches of people I drew while exploring the Couve... I think I'm getting beter at these quickly drawn portraits/characters... More soon!

Hi!

This lil doodle is a concept for something in the works.... I've got a lot crunching off the blog these days that I hope in the near future to start sharing more and more bits leading up to something big by the end of November... Stay tuned and thanks for following...

Sabbatical Countdown To-Do's

In 4 weeks I'll start a 6-week Sabbatical. An effort on my part to immerse myself in illustration, art and silkscreening without the Steady 40ty getting in the way. A couple years ago I started having periodical "Meetings With Self". This served as a check-in on what I've been trying to get done and have gotten done, what I want to do and setting some realistic milepost to getting there. In general this has worked pretty well in keeping me motivated. So below are my pre-sabbatical Meeting With Self... from ideas I need to resolve, supplies I need to buy, procuring a gallery/retail space for a Thanksgiving event and a December show... I though posting here would help keep me on track...

I'll be checking back in regularly on my progress so stay tuned and I hope to get more of my new comic books pre-production sketches up soon.

More from Sickbay

A sneak peak at a project in the works... now back to bed with hot tea for me.

ButtEyed Monster

I've been home sick the last couple days and have been catching up on podcast while recovering from what seems to be a fun bout of allergy f.u.... There's a great RadioLab podcast they just released on Parasites and this is the lil critter that got conjured up as a result of listening in. Check out the podcast, there's some fascinating stuff, like how your fondness of your cat may actually be the result of you being a victim of Toxoplasmosis...

Cross Pollenating on Tilteed.com

I started this drawing a few post back with the intention of coloring it in. I started digitizing it and decided it would be my first submission to Tilteed.com. This required a simpler color palate, 6 max. So if you like it, go vote for it and maybe we can get it printed up!

I haven't been big on the T-Shirt contest scene but Tilteed.com has a combination of exposure, compensation and artist rights that's got me excited about the possibility of what these sites can be for indy t-shirt designers. It also provides me a chance to do shirts and designs that are a bit beyond my current capabilities. The site is new and the community small but there have been some pretty cool shirts made, my favs so far

Greg Abotts Joy Ride
Rawroutlouds - Get a Job
TangYauHoongs - So Hot Yet So Cold

So join up, vote up and submit some stuff too...

Cross Pollenating

There are two things I certainly don't draw enough of these days, women and pleasant moments. So to help fill the gap... here's both. I hope to do some digital ink and paint on this one. I'll post an up date when I think it's ready.

Cautionary Tales of Modern Failure Volume #2 - W.I.P.

Above is the last frame of "Cautionary Tales of Modern Failure Volume #1" A smoking fish. In Volume #2 we pick right up were we left off with Smokey the Fish floating in what seems to be an endless void. I've decided as I work on the art for this edition I'm going to post various elements beginning with the first, roughed out, 10 panels of the next story in the Cautionary Tales of Modern Failure series. I'm sure a lot will change from now and my self imposed deadline of October 1, 2009, and I hope that I will be posting at least weekly on the progress of this story. So with out further adieu I humbly present the first bits of "The Tortoise and the Meteorite".

This story has been on my back burner for years. A while back I completed the following painting to help spur on the completion of this work. Thoughts always welcome, and if you're interested in Volume #1 you can purchase it via my Etsy store.
